The Easy Guide To Install A WordPress Theme

You need to install a WordPress theme in order to create a website with WordPress. WordPress themes are the robust frameworks used to build a functioning website with no coding. Thus, it is important to know how to install a WordPress theme. In this quick WordPress tutorial, we explain the three standard ways to install a WordPress theme.

A) Install a Theme from WordPress Theme Directory

If you are installing a theme that is available in the Official WordPress theme directory, then follow these steps to install your selected theme. 

Step 1: Click on Appearance>>Themes in the WordPress admin dashboard.

This will open the themes page.

Step 2: Click on the Add New button on top of the page.

This will open the official WordPress Themes Directory. 

Step 3: Select your theme from the WordPress theme directory.

You can look for a theme from the Featured, Popular, Latest and Favorites tabs. There is also a filter option that lets you filter themes as per specified features. You can use these to quickly shortlist the themes you want to install.

You can directly use the search themes option to find the theme you want to install. 

Once you select the theme you want to install, click on it. 

For example, let’s say we are selecting the Storefront theme. Once we click on it, we see the preview screen like the following.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Install’ button. 

Once the install is complete, you will see the ‘Activate button’ appear in place of ‘Install’ button. 

Step 5: Click on ‘Activate’ to use the theme on your WordPress website.

B) Upload Theme from WordPress Admin Area

WordPress provides a very useful way of installing a theme by letting you directly upload the theme to your WordPress installation. 

This method is particularly useful when your theme is not listed in the WordPress theme directory. For example, if it’s a premium theme or a custom theme. 

Follow these steps to install a WordPress theme using upload option.

Step 1: In your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance>>>Themes.

Step 2: Click on the Add New button on top of the page.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Upload Theme’ button

Step 4: You will now see the option to upload the .zip file of your theme. Upload the file and click on ‘Install Now’ 

Once installed, you can activate the theme by clicking on the ‘Activate’ button. 

C) Use FTP to Install a WordPress Theme

FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol. It is used to upload, download and manage files between a computer and FTP server. Using FTP is the advanced level of installing WordPress theme. Though it’s not recommended for beginners, the method has its advantages and you can quickly master it if you do it carefully.

Here are the steps you should follow to install a WordPress theme using FTP. 

Step 1: Download the zip file of your WordPress theme from source. Extract the theme folder. You will need this folder to upload via FTP

Step 2: Connect to your site from the FTP client on your computer

Step 3:  Access the path wp-content/themes

Step 4: Upload your Theme folder here.

You can activate your theme from the dashboard.
